Frequently Asked Questions About Boiled Wool
What boiled wool clothing is available at petit cochon?
Our boiled wool collection includes grow-with-me overalls, cozy suits, jackets, pull-on hats, and trousers. All styles are made with great care in our Berlin workshop and accompany children through autumn, winter, and spring.
Why do so many parents choose boiled wool?
Many parents appreciate boiled wool because the material naturally keeps you warm, remains breathable, hardly attracts dirt, and feels comfortable to wear. At the same time, boiled wool is durable and versatile—from a baby’s first walk to playing energetically at the playground.
Is boiled wool sustainable?
Virgin wool is a renewable resource. Thanks to its durability and the fact that it rarely needs washing, boiled wool is considered a particularly sustainable material. High-quality clothing often lasts children through several sizes or can be passed on to siblings.
Can wool fleece be worn in winter?
Yes. Together with suitable clothing underneath, wool fleece reliably keeps babies and children comfortable through fall, winter, and spring. In very cold temperatures, additional layers of clothing or a lined model may be advisable.
Does boiled wool need to be washed frequently?
No. Usually, it is sufficient to air out boiled wool thoroughly after wearing it. Virgin wool has self-cleaning properties and hardly absorbs odors. We recommend a gentle wool cycle with wool detergent or cold hand washing only for heavier soiling.
Does boiled wool scratch?
High-quality boiled wool feels pleasantly soft. Since boiled wool is worn as an outer layer of clothing, there is always a soft base layer next to the skin underneath.
Is boiled wool better than softshell?
That depends on how it will be used. Softshell offers greater protection from rain and wind, but is usually made from synthetic fibers. Boiled wool provides natural temperature regulation, high breathability, and a comfortable feel. That’s why many families consciously choose boiled wool for everyday use.
What is the difference between boiled wool and wool fleece?
Both materials are made of virgin wool. Boiled wool is additionally felted, giving it a denser and more durable surface. Wool fleece is softer and lighter, making it especially suitable as a warming mid-layer.
What do you wear under boiled wool?
Directly against the skin, we recommend breathable natural materials such as cashmere blends, micromodal, bamboo, or cotton. On cooler days, a second layer of fine knitwear, organic sweatshirt fabric, or cotton fleece completes the outfit. Wool boiled fabric as an outer layer provides protection from wind and cold.
Why do children sweat less in boiled wool?
Virgin wool can absorb moisture and release it to the outside. This helps maintain a more balanced body climate than many synthetic fibers. Many parents therefore appreciate that their children are less likely to overheat in boiled wool.
Is boiled wool waterproof?
Boiled wool is not completely waterproof. However, the natural wool grease (lanolin) makes the fabric water-repellent. Light rain or snow often rolls off. In prolonged heavy rain, we also recommend wearing waterproof rainwear.
Is boiled wool windproof?
Boiled wool is highly wind-resistant. Because the virgin wool is densely fulled, cold wind has difficulty penetrating to the body. At the same time, the material remains breathable and prevents heat buildup.
What temperatures is boiled wool suitable for?
With the right clothing underneath, boiled wool is suitable for temperatures between +15 °C and below 0 °C. What matters is not only the outdoor temperature, but also the wind, sunlight, activity level, and whether the child is being carried or lying in a stroller.
Why is boiled wool so well-suited for babies?
Babies cannot regulate their body temperature as well as adults yet. Virgin wool helps naturally: It retains warmth, releases excess heat, and can absorb moisture without feeling wet. This keeps the body climate pleasantly balanced.
