ESSENTIAL BABY ITEMS – How many bodysuits does a newborn need? The practical guide to essential baby items

What does a baby need in the first year?

When it comes to preparing for a baby, many parents feel overwhelmed by the flood of information. What size? What style? How many items? What is really important? In this article, we—as mothers of several children—have summarized what you really need at the beginning and what can be purchased later as needed.

Baby essentials: What does a baby really need?

The anticipation of your baby’s arrival is huge—and often comes with a long shopping list. But a good set of essentials for a newborn usually requires less than many people think. The most important things are comfortable, skin-friendly, practical clothes that make everyday life easier and fit for a long time.

The most important basics for the first few months

For the first few weeks, we recommend:

  • 4–6 Loopbodys
  • 2–3 pairs of trousers
  • 2 rompers
  • 4 tops
  • 2 pairs of pajamas or Loopbody / Loopstrampler
  • 2 hats (one lightweight, one warm depending on the season)
  • 4–6 pairs of socks
  • 1 jacket / baby coverall suitable for the season

Clothes that grow with your baby are especially practical. This means you don’t have to keep buying new ones, and favorite pieces can be worn for considerably longer. Most importantly, your baby should feel comfortable, with nothing pinching or chafing.

Our tip: The Loopbody

A bodysuit is part of every baby’s basic wardrobe. Our Loopbody was specially designed to grow with your baby through several sizes and make diaper changes easier.

The innovative design doesn’t need snap fasteners and offers plenty of room for cloth diapers. This means it fits many babies for considerably longer than conventional bodysuits.

Comfortable trousers for every day

Especially during the first few months, babies spend a lot of time being carried, in the stroller, or crawling. That’s why soft, comfortable trousers are particularly important.

Our baby knickers offer plenty of freedom of movement, don’t press on the tummy, and grow with your baby for a long time.

For outdoors: The wool fleece coverall

For autumn, winter, and cool spring days, a warm coverall is part of a baby’s initial equipment. A wool fleece coverall protects against wind and cold without causing your baby to overheat. Wool fleece helps regulate temperature, making it ideal for changeable weather.

Sustainable baby essentials instead of excess

Babies grow quickly. That’s why it’s worth choosing high-quality, grow-with-me clothing. This means buying less, sorting out less, and often passing the clothes on to siblings or other families.

Baby’s initial equipment from the state

When a baby is on the way, there are many things to buy for the baby’s initial equipment. What should actually be a joyful occasion can quickly become a challenge when money is tight—especially for parents who rely on Bürgergeld. The necessary expenses for the baby’s initial equipment can hardly be covered by Bürgergeld alone, which is why basic income support covers these costs.

Here you can find out how and what kind of support you can apply for.
